Le Voyage Infini

There is a particular quality of light that comes just before dawn — neither dark nor bright, but suspended, trembling between one world and the next. *Le Voyage Infini* lives entirely in that threshold. Aia Bower has spent a lifetime in motion, crossing oceans and cultures, arriving and departing, learning again and again the strange grammar of beginning. This painting is the distillation of all of it: the spiraling uncertainty of departure, the fragile beauty of what is left behind, and the quiet, insistent pull toward something like home. The surface tells its story in layers, the way memory does. Ghostly circles drift through a darkened sky — planets, nests, perhaps the lemniscate of infinity that Bower traces through nearly all her work, a reminder that every ending curves back into a beginning. Below, organic clusters of looping white forms bloom and accumulate like coral or lace, like the intricate structures we build to hold what matters most and the way they, too, can dissolve. Paint has been applied, obscured, and reapplied; images rise and recede beneath translucent veils, the visual equivalent of what she has described as 'the ephemeral and fragile nature of living things.' To stand before this painting is to feel both the weight of the journey and the grace of arrival — the infinite voyage that is a life fully, restlessly, tenderly lived. Bower painted this in Sausalito, looking out toward Mount Tamalpais from the studio she finally, beautifully, calls her own.
