Abstract Landscape I

Aia Bower has crossed more horizons than most — forty moves, eight of them international, a life lived in the spaces between departure and return. Stand in front of this painting long enough and you begin to feel that biography in the layers themselves. Each band of color reads like a different crossing: the pale warmth of a California morning remembered from childhood, the cool periwinkle of a Parisian afternoon, the dense charcoal of an arrival at night into somewhere unknown, the gold seam of a found-again sunrise. Nothing is named. Everything is felt. The horizontal is Bower's native grammar here, borrowed perhaps from the wide Bay views outside her Sausalito studio window, perhaps from the geological patience of the hills above Mill Valley where she grew up. The layers do not compete — they breathe together, the way years settle into a life, the way a person eventually comes to hold every place they have ever called home all at once. The soft, uneven edges between bands are the most honest lines in the painting: not clean breaks, but slow transitions, the way one chapter of a life shades almost imperceptibly into the next. This is a painting about the grace of return — not as an ending, but as a gathering. Bower has said that home became her great subject only after she had lost and found it so many times. Here, in oil, in light, in silence, she has painted what that finally feels like.
