Flow

There is a particular quality of light that falls on water in Marin — early morning, late afternoon, or just after rain — when the surface becomes a mirror so perfect it stops being a reflection and starts being its own world entirely. *Flow* was born from that threshold. Aia Bower has spent a lifetime learning to let go: of addresses, of languages, of the familiar weight of home. What she found, again and again at the far end of each uprooting, was that certain things flow with you regardless — light, memory, the deep hum of the body knowing it is alive. In *Flow*, dark forms drift and pool across a ground of warm ivory and cool grey like clouds seen from below, or shadows passing over shallow water. Nothing is fixed. The horizontal banding — a quiet echo of Diebenkorn's beloved zones — suggests both landscape and pure feeling, the way a landscape becomes a feeling when you have stood before it long enough. Layers built up and drawn back, shapes that surface and then let go: Bower paints the way memory actually works. To stand before this piece is to be invited into a particular kind of suspension — the held breath between leaving and arriving, between what was and what comes next. It is a painting about flow in the deepest sense: not movement for its own sake, but the grace of releasing what cannot be held.
