Light Dancing on Blue Water

There is a place Aia Bower knows well — that suspended moment when you stand at the edge of the San Francisco Bay and the late afternoon sun breaks across the water, scattering into a thousand shifting fragments of gold and blue. It is the light of coming home. This painting holds that moment, not as a record of it, but as a feeling — the way memory holds something: incomplete, shimmering, true. Built up in the layered, gestural way that defines Bower's practice, the canvas tells the story of accumulation — of marks made and partially buried, of color pressed forward and pulled back, of light that surfaces through depth. The golden fragments floating through the blue speak to something she has described again and again in her work: the ephemeral nature of what we love, the grace found in impermanence. After nearly forty moves across two continents, the Bay's familiar shimmer became a kind of homecoming she needed to paint. Bower paints from her studio in Sausalito, where Mount Tamalpais rises behind her and the water catches the sky. That view, and all the years it took to return to it, is woven into every stroke.
