Aia Bower, who has moved close to forty times across two continents — writing and rewriting her own story in borrowed rooms and new languages — knows something about words that almost hold, and the feelings that remain when the words themselves are gone. The ground is deep night: layers of black and indigo built up with wide, horizontal brush strokes that carry the rhythm of a restless hand. Into this darkness, warmth insists on arriving — pale gold breaks through in patches, the color of lamplight in a Paris window, of late California sun on water. White marks pulse like breath, like the momentary clarity that comes just before sleep.
