Sanctuary — Blue, Sand and Light

There is something in this painting that knows what it means to leave. Aia Bower has moved close to forty times — across oceans, between languages, through the beautiful disorientation of lives lived in France and Italy and finally, gratefully, home. This painting carries all of that. The central form — luminous, striated, cradled — is a nest, but it is also a return. It rises from a landscape of blues and golds that feel simultaneously like water, like sky, like the memory of both. The scratched lines etched into the white form are not damage — they are evidence of living. Layer upon layer of oil paint has been built up and scraped back, the way experience accumulates and recedes, the way home means something different every time you come back to it. The cobalt blue that pulses through the composition is the blue of a California sky seen from a Paris window, remembered, ached for. The warm sand tones are the light of Sausalito in the late afternoon, falling across the studio floor. To sit with this painting is to sit with the particular grace of someone who has learned, through repetition and loss and love, that home is not a place — it is a feeling you carry inside you, and sometimes, if you are very lucky, you find it again.
