Greetings from Göttingen

There is a particular quality of light in a meadow in full summer — not the grand light of a sunset or a seascape, but something quieter and more insistent, the light that pools inside a field when no one is watching. Alexandra Bailliere found that light and pressed it into the canvas. Standing before this painting, you feel the grass still moving, the flowers still opening, the whole scene holding its breath in the warmth of an afternoon that has not yet decided to end. The painting belongs to Bailliere's Fields & Meadows series, and it carries the hallmarks of her deepest preoccupations: the overlooked place, the verge between chaos and composition, the moment where the natural world arranges itself into something that feels almost too perfect to be accidental. Blue cornflowers and white starflowers scatter across a ground of layered, gestural green; yellow heads catch the eye like small suns; a generous lavender bloom in the lower register holds the whole composition with unexpected tenderness. Nothing here is manicured. Everything here is exactly right. For Bailliere, painting a field is not an act of documentation — it is an act of attention. This is what her work asks of its viewers too: to slow down, to look past the obvious, to find the beauty that was always there in the places we walk past without stopping. This painting is an invitation to stop.
