Kit's Bouquet

Alexandra Bailliere has always been drawn to the places where beauty accumulates unnoticed — highway verges thick with buttercups, a Marin headland at low tide, a garden bed allowed to run its own wild logic. This painting is a document of just such a moment: a garden in full, unhurried conversation with itself, where hydrangeas lean into orange lilies and coral blooms push through calathea leaves as though no one has told them to arrange themselves politely. Looking at it, you feel what it is to kneel close to a flower bed in midsummer and lose your peripheral vision entirely — the world contracting to this colour, this texture, this particular blue against this particular orange. Bailliere painted it in oil on primed canvas in 2026, building the surface in characteristic layers that give the petals a quiet physical weight even as the palette sings. The striped, variegated leaves — almost architectural in their patterning — hold the whole in check, providing a visual grammar that lets the eye move without ever feeling lost. It is the kind of painting that changes with the light and with the viewer's mood: joyful on a bright morning, lush and almost nocturnal by lamplight. Bailliere has said she paints the overlooked and the incongruous — here, the overlooked is the flower bed at the end of the garden path, the one we walk past every day without really seeing. She makes it impossible to walk past again.
