Midsummer Bloom

There is a particular moment in a garden in late spring — before the heat of summer flattens everything — when the flowers are so dense and so insistent that the whole bed seems to tremble. That is the moment Alexandra Bailliere has captured here. Not a single bloom, arranged and observed, but the whole magnificent, overflowing fact of it: daisies shouldering through a pink tide of smaller flowers, stems crossing, petals overlapping, the garden doing what gardens do when left to their own beautiful logic. Bailliere grew up looking carefully — Saturday charcoal lessons at ten, figure drawing at eleven, years of training that taught her how to see before she learned how to let go. In this painting, both things are present at once. The daisies are observed with precision: their radiating petals, their warm yellow centres, the slight tilt of a head in the wind. But the ground they grow from is pure feeling — magenta and fuchsia and deep rose built up in layered, gestural marks that pulse with energy, scattered through with the unexpected turquoise and blue that appear throughout her work like small gifts. This is a painting about abundance — about the places where beauty is so ordinary it almost goes unnoticed, and so extraordinary it stops you cold. It belongs to the same impulse that drives Bailliere to pull over on a highway to look at Bermuda buttercups, to paint Rodeo Beach in every light. The overlooked, made luminous. The everyday, made unforgettable.
