Morning at Merecombe

This monumental 48 × 84-inch oil on canvas detonates with colour — a surging, immersive wall of cobalt bluebells that pushes forward from the picture plane with almost physical force. Alexandra Bailliere works the surface with confident, layered gesture, each bell-shaped bloom rendered with a painter's shorthand that is simultaneously precise and wildly alive. Warm straw-yellow stems coil and arc through a dense emerald foreground, while in the distance patchwork fields roll toward a gleaming lough under a cool sky — a landscape that feels both ancient and electric. At a scale that commands a room, this is the kind of painting that stops collectors mid-step. The chromatic intelligence here is extraordinary: Bailliere has set the purest of blues against the most saturated of greens, finding a tension that is joyful rather than discordant, urgent rather than decorative. It is a painting about abundance, about the moment nature tips past orderly into overwhelming — and about the painter's ability to hold that chaos in a single, exhilarating frame. Part of the Fields & Meadows series and exhibited with Hang Art, San Francisco, this work arrives at exactly the right moment in Bailliere's career — after her debut solo show, ahead of her Burren College of Art residency in Ireland, and with a growing institutional footprint that includes the Mayo Clinic and Freshfields. A large-format, exhibition-proven oil from a rapidly ascending Bay Area voice: this is a defining acquisition opportunity.
