Nothing Gold Can Stay

There is a particular quality of light on a spring morning when a window becomes a painting within a painting — when the blossoms outside press themselves against the glass and the room fills with their reflected glow. Alexandra Bailliere has caught exactly that moment here. A vase of tulips, some already nodding, some still tightly furled, stands on a dark surface before that luminous rectangle of window, and the scene holds its breath between the interior world and everything blooming beyond it. What makes the painting linger is the shadow. Cast long and expressive across the pale tabletop, it is almost more alive than the flowers themselves — a silhouette that reaches and curls, that speaks to the energy latent in even the most domestic arrangement. Bailliere has always been drawn to the overlooked and the incongruous, to the places where unexpected beauty surfaces, and here she finds it in the conversation between a glass vase, a darkened foreground, and a window full of spring light. This is the kind of painting that changes depending on the time of day and the mood you bring to it. Some mornings it reads as pure optimism — all blossom and green. Other times the weight of that dark horizontal pulls, and the tulips feel tender and fleeting. It is a painting about looking, about the way a single interior moment can contain an entire season.
