About This Work
The south end of Rodeo Beach is not a gentle place. The cliffs are dark and massive, streaked with the olive and ochre of coastal scrub, dropping hard into water that is always moving, always rearranging the black pebbles at the shore. Alexandra Bailliere has stood here and looked — really looked — and what comes back through the painting is that quality of the headlands that resists sentiment: the sheer geological weight of the place, the cold brightness of the sky, the surf breaking white against teal.
This small oil panel is part of Bailliere's ongoing practice of painting the Marin coast close to her home in Mill Valley — the same beaches and seascapes that thread through her larger studio works. There is nothing incidental about the composition. The dark mass of the cliff is given its full gravity, anchored against a sky of almost Mediterranean clarity, while the foreground pebble shore grounds the viewer in the specific, gritty texture of this particular beach. It is a painting about being present in a landscape that does not ask for your approval — and finding, in that indifference, something close to beauty.
