The Hour of Lime

It starts with the shadow. Before the eye even finds the flowers, it travels the long dark stripe cutting diagonally across a lawn so green it almost hums — a shadow cast by something just out of frame, holding the weight of a summer afternoon in its cool dark edge. Alexandra Bailliere has always been drawn to these threshold moments: the place where light turns, where the garden opens onto something less defined, where beauty appears not in the obvious centre but at the corner of your vision. Then the hydrangeas arrive, and everything shifts. Three great white globes of bloom press in from the right edge of the canvas, each one a constellation of tiny petals painted with patient, almost tender attention. They glow against the dark foliage behind them — cream and palest mint and warm white — and their roundness against all those urgent diagonal greens creates a stillness at the heart of the image. This is the Marin garden in full summer: exuberant, a little overgrown, lit hard and casting long shadows across a lawn that seems to go on forever. Bailliere painted this as part of her Blooms Up Close series, and the closeness matters. To look at this painting is to be asked to slow down, to move in, to find the world again in a single ordinary corner of a garden on an ordinary afternoon. It is the kind of beauty she has always chased — not the grand view, but the place just to the side of it, where no one thought to look.
