Iden Green

There is a moment in late spring — perhaps in a garden just past its formal edge, where the mown lawn gives way to something wilder — when the light seems to press down through the canopy and set the whole understory on fire. Alexandra Bailliere has lived inside that moment and painted it large. A great grey tree rises at the left, its bare dark branches spreading against a cool pale sky, and below it the world is unmistakably, insistently alive: grasses pressing into one another, white-headed flowers on slender stems, a bank of screaming yellow forsythia or broom blazing behind, and — quietly, almost shyly — two peach-pink tulips opening at the very bottom of the canvas. The tulips are the painting's secret. Everything else surges upward and outward with spring's impersonal generosity, but those two small blooms look almost tender, almost human. It is a characteristic Bailliere move: the unexpected detail that makes the overlooked place feel suddenly, personally yours. This is a painting about the beauty that accumulates in the gaps — between the formal and the wild, between the seen and the felt — and it asks you to slow down long enough to find it.
