Eiffel at Night

Annie Bates-Winship arrived at the Champ de Mars the way she always arrives at a place — camera ready, senses open, keeping her visual journal. The summer air was warm, the evening crowd unhurried, and then the tower lit up. Not gradually, but all at once — gold and insistent against the deepening blue of the Paris sky. A searchlight swept overhead. She raised the camera. What she captured is the feeling of being a stranger in the most beautiful city in the world and suddenly feeling entirely at home. The promenade stretches toward the light, flanked by trees whose leaves catch a vivid green from the ground lamps below. Small figures walk ahead, silhouetted pilgrims drawn toward something larger than themselves. It is the simple beauty she always seeks — not the postcard version, but the lived one, the one you feel in your chest. A friend once described looking at Annie's photographs as peering through a peephole into a secret garden. Here, that secret garden is Paris herself — familiar to millions, yet in this moment, seen entirely through one quiet, attentive eye.
