Insight-Out

Annie Bates-Winship walks through the world with her camera the way others keep a diary — pen always ready, nothing too small or too strange to deserve a second look. On one such unhurried day, she came upon a wagon wheel leaning against a warm adobe wall, its wooden spokes painted in swirling layers of teal, violet, and fire. Someone had turned this relic of motion into a mandala, a quiet act of transformation she might easily have passed by. She did not pass by. Through her lens, the wheel became something else entirely — a portal, a compass, a dream-catcher spinning at the edge of the ordinary world. The blazing orange of the stucco wall wraps around it like afternoon heat made visible, while river stones and dry earth anchor the scene to the real and the tangible. At the center, a white spoked symbol glows like a small sun, patient and still amid all that chromatic energy radiating outward. This photograph lives in the tradition Annie has cultivated across decades of looking closely: the belief that beauty is not rare, only unnoticed. Like a peephole into a secret garden — as a friend once described her work — this image invites the viewer to lean in, to linger, and to wonder who painted that wheel, and why, and what it means to find it gleaming in the California sun.
