Lovely Sunset

Annie was simply outside, camera in hand, moving through the familiar rhythms of her San Anselmo neighborhood — and then the sky did this. In an instant, the ordinary world cracked open. Clouds that had been grey and unremarkable just minutes before erupted into rivers of amber and scarlet, lit from below by a sun already beyond the horizon. She raised her camera the way she always does: intuitively, without overthinking, trusting the moment. The power lines are there because they were always there — part of the everyday landscape she moves through, the kind of detail most people edit out or photograph around. Annie left them in. They are the peephole her friend once described: the small, human-scaled entry point through which we tumble into something vast and secret. The silhouetted trees frame the spectacle like a stage, grounding the celestial in the terrestrial, reminding us that this wildfire of color happened above someone's backyard, above someone's ordinary Tuesday evening. This photograph is a page from her visual journal — a record of connection, of being present enough to witness what most of us miss. Looking at it, you feel both the scale of the sky and the intimacy of the moment. That is Annie's gift: she finds the secret garden just outside the door.
