Maui Altar

Somewhere on her travels — perhaps in a temple corridor, a roadside shrine, or a sun-drenched interior — Annie Bates-Winship raised her camera and let the world speak. She has always shot like keeping a visual journal, and this image reads like one of its most luminous entries: a painted bodhisattva, multi-armed and serene, seated in lotus upon a bed of peonies, framed by a golden aureole and a sky that melts from lavender to warm amber over a glittering sea. The mural itself is an act of devotion — painted hands offering blessings, a crown jeweled with intention, robes swirling in colours that feel less mixed than conjured. Annie's lens finds all of it without fuss, without intervention, the way she has always worked: present, receptive, connected. The tropical plants lean in. The stars hold steady. The ocean breathes behind the figure like a quiet exhalation. To look at this photograph is to feel what Annie has always sought to illuminate — the simple beauty that surrounds us, the sacred tucked into the everyday, the secret garden glimpsed through the peephole of a single, unhurried moment. It is a picture of faith, of colour, of a traveler who knew when to stop and look.
