Maui Lifeguard Station

Annie Bates-Winship was keeping her visual journal the day the sky over Maui split into two worlds. Below, warm sand stretched easy and familiar, and a cheerful yellow lifeguard tower stood its post as it always had. Above, a massive storm front was rolling in, its charcoal weight pressing down toward the thin bright strip of blue that still held between earth and cloud. She raised her camera because that is what she does — not to plan, but to respond, to connect, to catch what the eye might otherwise let slip away. The result is a photograph that holds its breath. The yellow tower — so domestic, so purposeful — becomes something else entirely against that roiling sky: a small act of human order facing down the indifferent grandeur of weather and ocean. The people around it are tiny, going about their afternoon, unaware perhaps of how the light has turned everything into a story about contrast and courage. This is the Maui that lives in Annie's Journeys series: not the postcard version, but the real place caught in an unguarded, unrepeatable moment. It is the kind of image her friend once described as a peephole into a secret garden — familiar enough to recognise, strange enough to stay with you.
