Plane Wing + Compass

It is May 8, 2018, just after seven in the morning. Annie has her camera in hand, as she almost always does — her way of staying present, of connecting. The plane banks southwest over the Nevada desert, and through the scratched oval window she sees it: the wing cutting against mountains worn to copper and rust, and above them a sky so blue it seems invented. She lifts the camera the way she always has, intuitively, like reaching for a pen to write something down before it disappears. Later, in the way that her collage work layers meaning upon meaning, she returns to the image and listens to what it wants to become. The compass rose arrives — transparent, glowing, ghostly — overlaid with the flight's own data: bearing 214° SW, altitude 37,715 ft, speed 470 mph. Coordinates fix this exact moment to a precise point on the earth's surface. What was a fleeting private glimpse becomes a document of wonder, a page from her visual journal that also happens to read like the screen of some dreaming navigator. This is what Annie's work has always done — revealed the secret garden hidden inside ordinary experience. Here, the ordinary is a commercial flight. The secret garden is everything: the ancient desert below, the engineered miracle of the wing, the invisible mathematics of direction and altitude that hold it all together. She gives us the peephole, and through it we tumble into something vast.
