It is late. The world has gone quiet, and Annie has her camera. She moves intuitively, the way she always has — not hunting for subjects but remaining open to them, letting the night speak first. And then: a staircase rising out of darkness toward an archway glowing warm and gold, a lone bench resting in the shadows like a patient companion, a chandelier sparkling like a secret. She stops. She sees what others have walked past a hundred times without noticing. This is the heart of Annie Bates-Winship's practice — illuminating the simple beauty all around us, the unnoticed gesture, the world not yet seen. A friend once described her photographs as peepholes into a secret garden, and here, that metaphor feels almost literal: the arch frames an interior threshold, warm and welcoming, while the deep surrounding dark keeps the rest of the world at bay. The staircase does not merely lead upward — it leads inward, toward something felt more than named.
