Portsmouth Boxes

This is Beverly Anderson at her most commanding — a wall of stacked wooden lobster crates fills the frame edge to edge, rope handles arcing upward in a riot of yellow, teal, and white against the rich grain of weathered timber. The image pulses with the raw energy of a working waterfront, every crate stamped, scrawled, and worn into something far more beautiful than its utilitarian origins suggest. Anderson's genius for pattern transforms industrial repetition into a composition that rivals any abstract canvas. For the collector, this photograph delivers exactly what Anderson's most celebrated works promise: a surface dense with texture, a palette earned by sun and salt air, and a geometric rhythm that rewards long looking. The rope handles alone — looping, curving, dancing across the stacked wood — create a visual counterpoint as dynamic as brushstrokes. This is the kind of piece that anchors a room and starts a conversation, equally at home in a corporate lobby or a serious private collection. Already held in esteemed collections including the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and Trillium Asset Management, Anderson's eye for the extraordinary hidden in the everyday is well established in the market. A fine-art print of this photograph is a durable, investment-grade acquisition — a piece of working America rendered timeless by one of California's most distinctive photographic voices.
