Blue Bones

Bret Arenson did not plan this blue. He listened for it. Standing in his studio in the Schoonmaker Building, with the fog off the Bay pressing at the windows, he let his body move across the canvas in that characteristic way of his — impulse by impulse, gesture layering over gesture until the surface found its own voice. The result is a field of blue that feels like memory and atmosphere simultaneously: the color of early morning on the water, of held silence before a note is played. There is something deeply musical in this piece — not melody, but sustain. Like a single guitar chord allowed to ring out fully, the blue here does not resolve into image or narrative. It simply continues, breathing quietly across the canvas, carrying the warmth of each brushstroke within its cool register. For those who live with abstract painting, this work rewards time. The longer you look, the more you hear.
