Tide Pool

There is a moment on the Sausalito waterfront when the morning fog hasn't quite lifted and the bay holds every color at once — grey, green, lavender, the faint blue of sky remembering itself. This painting was born from that kind of moment. Not planned, not composed in the conventional sense, but listened into being: Bret standing before the canvas, brush in hand, letting impulse move through him the way a musical phrase moves through a guitarist's fingers before the mind catches up. Stroke by stroke, the surface grew into something between atmosphere and membrane — a field of pale lavender and sage that feels less painted than accrued, the way lichen accumulates on stone, or the way a chord sustains after the fingers have lifted. The marks are small and directional, crosshatching and layering until depth appears where there was only flatness. It is a painting about the act of listening — to the body, to the material, to the silence between gestures. For the viewer, it offers the same invitation: slow down, stay a while, and let the field open.
