Spirit House #1

Bret Arenson paints the way a musician improvises: no score, no predetermined structure, only the moment and what the body knows. Standing in his waterfront studio in the Schoonmaker Building, he loaded a brush — perhaps one he made himself from found materials — and let the first violet mark find its own place on the canvas. Then another. Then another, darker, almost black. Then a flash of acid yellow, the way a guitar note cuts through a chord. This painting grew the way a jazz ensemble builds a head arrangement: from gesture answering gesture, impulse feeding impulse, until the whole canvas breathed as one. What has emerged is something between a field and a swarm, between a weather system and a meditation. The pale ground holds all that violet turbulence with remarkable calm, as though the white of the canvas is the silence from which every mark speaks. The yellow-green accents are not decorations — they are questions the painting asks of itself, moments where something lighter and sharper breaks through the deep purple mass and reminds you that this surface is still alive, still moving. For Bret, the inner experience, the material, and the finished painting are one whole. To look at this canvas is to enter that wholeness — to feel the rhythm of a body that has spent decades listening to what the next gesture will reveal, on a stage in Paris, on a waterfront in Sausalito, and here, in paint, in this single irrepeatable surface.
