Spirit House #2

Stand close and the painting dissolves into a hundred separate moments — a drag of the brush here, a pressed dot there, a looping indigo line that curls like a vine finding its direction. Stand back and it coheres into something unmistakably alive, a canopy or a meadow or the surface of light on moving water, though Bret Arenson never set out to paint any of those things. He set out to listen to his hand, and his hand knew something he didn't yet. The blush ground came first, soft and open, the color of early morning before the day decides what it wants to be. Then the greens arrived — not placed but released, mark after mark building a density that feels ecological rather than compositional, the way a hillside above Sausalito accumulates growth without anyone arranging it. The indigo accents are the last word, small and precise, the way a musician drops a note into a chord that wasn't missing it until it arrived. This is what it means to work from the body outward. The painting carries the record of an afternoon in the Schoonmaker Building studio, the particular quality of attention Arenson brought to the canvas that day, the rhythm of a hand that has also played guitar for decades and knows how to move between restraint and release. You are not looking at a representation of nature. You are looking at the trace of a mind in conversation with itself, and finding, in that trace, something that feels like the world.
