Spirit House #3

There is a morning quality to this painting — the way light on the water off the Sausalito waterfront breaks into a thousand separate glints before your eye can organize them into something singular. Bret Arenson stood before this canvas and let that sensation move through him, his hand following wherever the impulse led, mark after mark accumulating like notes in an improvised guitar passage: each one complete, each one part of something larger. The cool greens and blues carry the atmosphere of the bay — that particular northern California light that is never quite warm, never quite cold, always shifting. Against this ground, the black gestural marks move like musical notation across a staff, while the scattered fires of burnt sienna refuse to let the composition rest. It is a painting about attention itself: the way the eye, like the mind, cannot hold everything at once and so finds its own path through. To spend time with this work is to understand something about Bret's practice — that the inner experience, the physical act, and the finished surface are genuinely one thing. What you are looking at is not a record of a feeling but the feeling itself, still present, still moving.
