Break the Ice

This is Charlie Callahan at his most surprising and most inevitable — a piece that detonates quietly and keeps expanding. A sheet of broken tempered glass laid over vintage graph paper becomes a radial explosion of fracture lines that pulse outward from a single impact point like a mandala born of pure force. The cracks spiral and splay with the same circular logic that has driven Callahan's urchin work for two decades, but here the pattern writes itself, authored by physics and preserved by the artist's hand. It is raw, irreproducible, and absolutely alive. Underneath the shattered surface, drawn figures rendered in cool cerulean blue — childlike, totemic, quietly insistent — refuse to be erased by the violence above them. The tension between fragility and persistence, between destruction and mark-making, is the emotional engine of this piece. It belongs in the rare category of works that announce themselves the moment they enter a room. For the collector, this is a one-of-a-kind object in the truest sense: the fracture pattern cannot be duplicated, the vintage graph paper cannot be replicated, and the drawings beneath are fixed in time. As Callahan's profile continues to rise — from the Bolinas Museum to Aqua Art Miami to his 2026 Batrayz presentation at Small Works — works from this intimate, experimental strand of his practice will only become more sought after. This is the piece you acquire before the conversation catches up to it.
