As The Crow Flies

There is a moment — brief, unrepeatable — when a crow lifts from a branch and opens its wings fully to the air. Chris Adessa caught that moment. Working in the monochrome palette she has made entirely her own, she gave this bird the same quiet reverence she gives a paintbrush or a teapot in her Everyday Sacred series: the sense that something ordinary, looked at long enough and honestly enough, becomes luminous. The crow crosses a pale, brushy ground — grey and white and the faint memory of space — its feathers layered in blacks that are never simply black, but shift from blue-dark to charcoal to near-smoke where the light finds an edge. One eye catches yours. It holds. Adessa grew up painting outdoors, shaped by years of plein air work along the Marin headlands and the rolling hills of West Marin, and there is still something of that directness in the mark — unhurried but certain, the way a bird moves when it knows where it is going. As The Crow Flies is a small painting. It carries a long distance.
