Chef's Choice

There is a knife in almost every kitchen in the world, and almost no one truly sees it. Chris Adessa sees it. In *Chef's Choice*, she lifts a familiar chef's knife from the drawer, sets it against a pale, quiet ground, and asks us to look — really look — at the curve of the blade, the weight of the riveted black handle, the way light moves across steel that has been made to be useful and has become, in that usefulness, beautiful. Adessa's path to this painting winds through years of plein air work on the windswept hills of West Marin, through a studio window always left open to the Bay, through the hard-won adaptability of an artist who learned to paint the world as it actually is. Her *Everyday Sacred* series is the natural arrival point of that journey: the conviction, earned slowly and surely, that nothing is too small or too common to deserve the full weight of attention. A chef's knife, given that attention, becomes a meditation on craft, on daily ritual, on the quiet dignity of objects that serve us without complaint. Painting in black, white, and grey, Adessa strips away the distraction of color so that form speaks alone — and in *Chef's Choice*, form speaks with extraordinary authority. The blade rises toward the top of the tall, narrow panel like a monument to the ordinary, and in its reflection you might glimpse your own kitchen, your own mornings, your own hands reaching for what is needed.
