Cocktail Cadenza

There is a moment before every good evening begins — a ritual of ice and anticipation, the cold weight of metal in the hand, the percussive shake that promises something worthwhile is coming. Chris Adessa found that moment worthy of a portrait. Cocktail Cadenza places a classic cocktail shaker at the center of the canvas and gives it the same reverent attention a Dutch master might have given a silver ewer. The object is ordinary. The painting is anything but. Adessa works in the tradition of her Everyday Sacred series, where she asks what happens when we slow down long enough to truly see the things we reach for without thinking. Painted in oil on linen in her studio overlooking San Francisco Bay, the shaker emerges from a cool, enveloping darkness — its curved body catching light in long, liquid strokes that feel almost like movement, almost like music. The title is her own: in a musical cadenza, the soloist takes a flourish before the main event. The cocktail shaker, she notes, is exactly that — the flourish before the pour. There is warmth and wit in this painting, alongside the quiet discipline of a painter who has spent years earning her eye outdoors in the Marin hills and the Channel Islands before bringing that attentiveness inside to the studio. Cocktail Cadenza is an invitation to pause before the evening begins, to notice the beauty already in your hands.
