Philodendron

There is something ancient and patient about these leaves. They arc upward along a sinuous stem — heart-shaped, ink-dark, threaded with veins of deep crimson and teal — as though reaching toward a light source just out of frame. Dana Christensen grew up drawn to places of quiet intensity, old mill towns full of memory and atmosphere, and that same sensibility lives in this image: a natural world observed closely, rendered as if through gauze or memory or rain on glass. The fine, almost woven texture overlaying the background transforms what might have been a straightforward botanical study into something far stranger and more beautiful. The pale citron and amber passages behind the leaves glow like sunlight diffused through frosted windows, and the hatching pattern — insistent, rhythmic, almost tactile — asks the viewer to slow down, to look again, to find what is hidden in plain sight. It is a photograph that has been altered, yes, but altered in the service of deeper truth. Christensen has said that her subject throughout is the natural world, beautiful as well as distressed, because everything tells a story. These dark leaves, suspended in their luminous, veiled atmosphere, tell one of elegant endurance — of beauty that persists even when half-obscured, even in shadow, even in the altered light of memory.
