Sky Trail in Fog

There is a moment in certain forests — early morning, or just after rain — when the mist doesn't simply obscure but transforms. The trees become more themselves: darker, taller, more absolute in their silence. And somewhere between the trunks, light arrives not as illumination but as presence, a warm amber breath that has no obvious source and needs none. Dana Christensen has lived inside that moment and brought it back whole. Growing up on the East Coast among decaying mill towns, drawn later to the vast open spaces of the American West, Dana has always been drawn to places that carry a feeling — loss, longing, the quiet persistence of nature. This forest is one of those places. The path barely visible at the base of the composition suggests passage, perhaps a way through, but the image does not promise arrival. It offers instead the journey itself: the cool dark on either side, the warm unknown ahead, the undergrowth of burnt sienna fern catching light at your feet. Made using her distinctive mixed-media approach — where photographic image and painterly surface become inseparable — this piece holds the grain and intimacy of an historic photographic process while breathing with the luminosity of layered paint. It is, like all of Dana's best work, a landscape that is also a state of mind: beautiful, a little distressed, and utterly alive.
