Waterlilies on Silk

Dana Christensen has always been drawn to thresholds — the edge where an old mill town surrenders to forest, where the California desert meets the sea, where light just barely holds its ground against encroaching dark. In this silk work, that threshold is a pond, and the lily pads are its keepers. They float at the boundary between a dense, almost primordial blackness and a pale, cloud-scattered sky mirrored in still water — two worlds held apart by a paper-thin membrane of silk and light. The lily pads themselves glow as if lit from underneath, their radiating veins charged with yellow and lime-green, their edges softening into blush and copper where the water laps. Crimson stems rise from the shadows behind them like half-remembered things. It is the kind of scene a photographer notices in a single breath — the moment before the light shifts, before a ripple erases the reflection, before the ordinary becomes extraordinary and then ordinary again. Dana caught it, and then rendered it in layers of image and paint on silk, so that the luminescence is not just seen but felt through the material itself. There is something deeply meditative about this work. Raised on the East Coast and now rooted in Sausalito, Dana has spent decades learning to look — at decay, at beauty, at the natural world in all its precariousness. This piece is an act of attention and of love, offered to a viewer willing to slow down and let the pond hold them for a while.
