Winged Rock

Daniel Sidoli has spent decades driving the highways and back roads of the American Southwest, and there are certain places the land simply insists you stop. Shiprock — Tsé Bitʼaʼí, the rock with wings — is one of them. Rising nearly 1,800 feet from the flat desert floor of northwestern New Mexico, this volcanic neck is the kind of formation that makes you reconsider the word 'permanence.' Sidoli didn't rush it. You can feel the patience in the frame. The image is wide and low and honest. The foreground rolls in waves of dry amber grass and scattered volcanic debris, the ridge line at left carrying its own jagged sentinels before the great spire claims the right side of the frame. The sky above is alive with cloud movement, its pale blue softened with light — not dramatic in the overwrought sense, but truthful in the way that only certain hours in the desert deliver.
