Jenny Baham was born in Taipei, and the visual language of spring blossoms — sakura, peach flower, the annual return of color to bare branches — was woven into her earliest sense of beauty long before she ever held a brush. When she finally found her calling in a beginner's sketching class at forty, that memory of flowering trees didn't leave her. It waited. It found its way here, onto a canvas where a dancer in full extension becomes the living spirit of spring itself, arms raised, fan open, gown catching a wind that only she can feel. The figure does not face us. Her back is turned, her identity dissolved into movement and color — and that, perhaps, is the point. This is not a portrait of a particular woman. It is a portrait of a feeling: the moment when something long held inside finally opens outward, when the discipline of years releases into pure expression. Jenny spent nearly a decade in the structured demands of the technology world before a doctor told her to find balance. She found it with a pencil, then a brush, then a canvas. This dancer, arms flung wide beneath a canopy of blossoms, is perhaps the most autobiographical image she has ever painted — without ever intending it to be. Against that impossible, luminous blue sky, the cherry blossoms rendered in loose, joyful impasto cluster and drift like applause.
