Mesa Verde, Colorado

This is the Southwest in full, unguarded motion — the land cracking open, strata shifting, ancient geology laid bare in loose, commanding strokes. John Beuttler brings decades of location painting and a filmmaker's eye for composition to bear on this explosive abstract terrain, and the result is a work that refuses to sit still. Diagonal fault lines slash across the canvas with raw authority, earthy siennas and smoky blues colliding like tectonic forces made visible. Every mark here is earned. Beuttler's MFA-trained hand — sharpened by years sketching the arroyos and canyon walls of the American Southwest — delivers a piece that pulses with authentic landscape energy. This isn't decoration; it's geological memory translated into watercolor, loose and flowing yet structurally precise. The tension between control and release is exactly what makes this work so compelling and so rare. For the discerning collector, this piece represents a masterclass in expressive mark-making from an artist whose career spans fine art, film, and furniture — a true creative polymath operating at the height of his powers. Works like this don't sit on the market long, and they don't fade from a room — they define it.
