Surrender Dorothy

She didn't paint the Wizard of Oz. She painted what happens after you've been down the road long enough to see it clearly — when the ruby slippers start to feel less like magic and more like muscle memory. In Kat Tatz's version of Oz, nothing is fixed to the ground. The Emerald City floats on a dark stalactite island, beautiful and slightly untethered, the way childhood landmarks look when you revisit them as an adult. Glinda towers above it all in lavender and light, wand raised, but her composure has a knowing edge — she's seen this story play out before. Dorothy stands below with her companions, still wide-eyed, still mid-journey. The Tin Man's silver form catches the ambient glow of the teal atmosphere. The Scarecrow leans in. Toto perches on a red-capped mushroom nearby, watching the same spectacle the rest of us are watching. Soap bubbles drift through the space between them all — delicate, iridescent, the kind of thing that looks like it should pop but somehow keeps floating. The words 'Surrender Dorothy' hang in the air like a whisper from the painting itself, half warning, half invitation. Tatz grew up in Las Vegas, where transformation is the whole industry — ordinary people stepping into sequins and stage light and becoming something larger. That sensibility bleeds into every inch of this canvas. The baroque gold frame, studded with hand-applied sculptural mushrooms, is part of the world too, not a border around it. You're not looking at Oz. You're standing at the threshold of it, deciding whether to step through.
