He doesn't explain himself. He doesn't have to. The cat in the wide black hat has been around long enough to know that the ones who talk the most are the ones who've done the least — so he just stares back at you, cigar smoke curling somewhere just out of frame, amber eyes reading everything and giving nothing away. He showed up in Kat Tatz's studio the way her best characters always do: not announced, not planned, just suddenly there on the canvas, telling her what he was supposed to be. Behind him, her world erupts in the electric swirl she knows better than anyone — neon ribbons of color looping like the old Vegas strip seen from a moving car at midnight, all that gorgeous chaos held in check by the sheer gravity of the figure at the center. He's not bothered by any of it. He's seen wilder nights. The antique frame around him isn't decoration; it's a theater, and he is very much the headliner. There's something in this painting about the kind of person — or creature — who becomes a legend not by trying to, but simply by refusing to be anything less than exactly themselves. Tatz has painted showgirls and white rabbits and cultural icons, but this outlaw cat might be the most quietly defiant thing she's ever made. He's not falling down any rabbit hole. He's the reason people check before they jump.
