Sacred Venus

She has always been here. Long before the name Venus was given to her, before the myths hardened into marble and the stories were written down, she existed in the layered memory of the earth — in pigment and pattern, in the markings people pressed into clay and skin to say: this is sacred, this endures. Kim Johnson has spent her career reaching toward that space between what's visible and what's felt, and in this painting she arrives somewhere ancient and certain. The figure emerges from a surface built like an artifact — collaged fabric, stenciled symbols, scraped and restacked paint — as if Johnson were not inventing her but uncovering her. The eyes are everything, as they always are in Johnson's work. One looks out with cool, steady clarity; the other burns amber-gold, lit from somewhere internal. Between them, a triquetra mark — triple unity, endless return — sits at the brow like a blessing or a brand. The face is green-tinged and earthen, beautiful in the way old things are beautiful: not despite their weathering but because of it. The surrounding panels of the composition hold their own language — honeycomb grids, labyrinthine borders, hand-like forms reaching upward from below — all of it speaking to cycles, to memory, to the things we inherit without knowing their names. This is what Johnson means when she says beauty is elemental and ancient. It is not decoration. It is recognition — the feeling of looking at something and knowing, without being able to say exactly why, that you have always known it. Venus here is not a goddess on a pedestal. She is the oldest thing in the room, and she is looking right back at you.
