Among Giants

This is California forest painting at its most visceral — a towering composition that pulls you upward through layers of shadow and into a blaze of open sky. Larry Bryson's signature impressionist brushwork charges every inch of the canvas: the sky vibrates with slashing, luminous strokes of periwinkle and white, while sunlit conifers erupt from deep, velvety darkness with an almost electric green intensity. The drama of light versus shadow here is not gentle — it is confrontational, alive, and impossible to ignore. Bryson's decades of biological observation give this piece a structural authority that purely gestural painters rarely achieve. The proportions of the trees, the way light catches only the outermost needled boughs while the trunks dissolve into rich black — these are choices grounded in genuine looking, not artistic shorthand. The result is a painting that rewards both the quick emotional response and the long, patient gaze. For the serious collector, this work represents everything that makes Bryson's practice distinctive and collectible: a proven exhibition record including the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassies program, a California landscape subject of enduring cultural resonance, and a painterly confidence that positions this piece alongside the finest traditions of California plein air and contemporary impressionism. Own the forest. Own the light.
