This is California forest painting at its most alive — a canvas that pulls you straight up into the canopy, where ancient trunks thrust toward an electrifying cobalt sky. Larry Bryson loads his brush with urgency, building the scene in bold, tactile strokes that practically vibrate with the energy of sunlight breaking through dense redwood and Douglas fir. The contrast between deep midnight greens and those explosive flashes of olive gold is not decorative — it is biological truth rendered in oil, the kind of truth only a painter who grew up walking through Mill Valley forest every single day could pull off. This piece commands a room. The upward composition draws the eye on an inevitable journey from the shadowed undergrowth to the open sky, creating a sense of scale and freedom that is rare in contemporary landscape painting. Bryson's impressionist touch keeps the forms dynamic and breathing — never static, never overworked — while his biologist's precision ensures every branch, every mass of foliage, sits exactly where nature placed it. For the serious collector, this is a work with genuine institutional pedigree: Bryson's paintings have hung in the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassies program and been juried into the San Diego Museum of Art and the Oakland Museum of California. Acquiring this piece means owning a singular vision of the California landscape by one of the state's most quietly authoritative voices — a painter still producing new major works in 2026.
