Amaranth Afternoon

There is a moment on a coastal California morning when the light does something almost unbelievable — it turns the shadow of a levee path into pure purple, and the meadow beyond into molten gold. LeeAnne Chappell was there for that moment, brush in hand, working fast the way only a plein air painter must. This path — one of her recurring subjects — stretches from the foreground into an open marsh alive with pink wildflowers and tall grasses swaying in the salt air. It is an invitation and a mystery at once. Paths have always called to LeeAnne because they carry the weight of decision: you choose them, and you never quite know where they will lead. This one rises along an embankment, flanked by dark silhouetted trees catching the last warmth of afternoon sun, the sky still luminous with pale gold and soft cloud. The wetlands stretch out to the left — perhaps San Pablo Bay, perhaps Nicasio — shimmering in colors that have no right to be so vivid and yet feel completely true. Standing before this painting, you feel the wind that was moving through the grasses when she painted it. You feel the particular freedom of a Northern California afternoon, open and golden and fleeting. This is what LeeAnne has spent thirty years learning to hold still — just long enough for the rest of us to find our way in.
