Gently Sloping

She set up her easel somewhere on the golden hills of Marin — perhaps Lucas Valley, perhaps Tennessee Valley — where the grass turns that impossible electric green in the season just after rain. The hill rises steeply before her, its surface alive with shifting light, and she begins to paint. A thin pale line — a path, a road, an invitation — traces along the hillside's lower edge and disappears, as LeeAnne's paths always do, into somewhere just out of sight. You know where it might lead.
