Lingering

LeeAnne Chappell stood at the edge of the wetlands as the day tipped toward evening, and the sky put on a show. Clouds piled and billowed in shades of blue and ivory, their undersides lit coral and amber by a sun already slipping below the dark ridge of distant hills. The still channel between the marsh grasses caught it all — every cloud, every blush of color — and for a moment the water and the sky became one continuous world. This is a place she knows well: the tidal wetlands along San Pablo Bay, where the land flattens and opens and the light behaves differently than anywhere else. The grasses on the left bank are thick and spiky, rendered in quick strokes of olive, yellow-green and sienna — the marks of someone working fast because the light is always moving. The warm gold burning along the right bank is the last of the afternoon, pooling in the shallows before the blue takes over completely. Paths have long been a recurring theme for LeeAnne — the sense that we choose a direction and never quite know where it leads. Here, the channel itself becomes the path, drawing the eye gently into the distance toward a rose-pink horizon, past the dark treeline, into whatever comes next. It is a painting about stillness and motion at once, about the way a single moment in nature can feel both fleeting and eternal.
