Blues Duet

Late in the evening, when the last light has left the Sausalito waterfront and the Marinship settles into its own quiet geometry, Leslie Allen returns to her canvas. The painting that emerges from those hours carries their mood: deep, resonant, lit from within. The great black forms that dominate this work are not heavy — they float, like the hulls of vessels half-remembered, like notes held long past their written value. The periwinkle ground beneath them breathes. There is a white loop at the centre of the composition — light, calligraphic, almost questioning — that feels like a bow drawn slowly across a cello string, the gesture that sets sound in motion before the sound itself arrives. Allen has always said that painting and music are the same thing for her; here that truth is visible. The hatched rectangle below it, scratched and layered, carries the memory of the shipyard workers she honours — their labour pressed into paint, their geometry an homage. This is a painting that asks you to slow down and listen. The burnt-orange flash behind the dark mass, the cool mint ellipse glowing like a porthole in the night — these are small revelations placed by a painter who knows exactly where to put the light. It is a nocturne in oil, and it stays with you the way music does: not as an image you remember, but as a feeling that resurfaces when you least expect it.
