Standing Figure

He stands with his head down, one hand raised to shield or shade his face, the other loose at his side. He is not performing for us. He may not know we're here. Bondi has painted him the way memory returns a person — recognizable in silhouette and gesture, but the details soft, the face half-gone, the body both present and dissolving into the layered ground behind him. The white outline that wraps the figure like breath on cold glass is one of Bondi's most quietly radical choices. It separates this man from the world — from the teal and mauve and cobalt planes that pulse behind him — and yet it also makes him feel suspended, like a figure preserved in the amber of a particular moment. A boyfriend, a brother, a familiar character from a certain time. The painting doesn't say. It only holds. Bondi has spoken of his figures as apparitions, 'separated from the landscape.' Here that instinct is fully realized. The man in dark jeans and bare torso could be standing in a Western interior, or nowhere at all — a self that surfaced during the reset of one of those enormous worktable mornings, conjured from color that felt right rather than color that looked right. He is someone known. He is already half-forgotten. That tension is the painting.
