Ballerina Ascending Staircase

She pauses on the stairs. Maybe she is checking her shoe, or gathering herself before the next step, or simply breathing in a moment no one else was meant to see. Nancy Cicchetti photographed this image herself — her daughter, perhaps, or a dancer caught in a quiet in-between — and then carried it into oil, where photographs become feelings and feelings become light. The tutu glows like something lit from within, pale gold at its heart bleeding outward into warm rose and coral. The staircase railing cuts a bold diagonal through the frame, a line of shadow and structure against all that warmth and softness. The eye travels down, then circles back up through the color, just as Cicchetti intends — movement as meaning, the canvas breathing. This is the story she began, and she leaves the rest to you. Where is she going? Where has she been? The painting does not say. It only offers this: a moment of luminous stillness, a figure poised between one thing and the next, and all that golden light holding her there.
