Deliha

She began, as she always does, with a photograph — perhaps taken on a visit to a museum, a gallery, a quiet room where a classical figure stood beside a market-fresh bouquet. But the photograph was only the door. What interested Nancy Cicchetti was the conversation between the two: the cold permanence of carved marble and the urgent, temporary vitality of calla lilies still reaching for light. She set them in dialogue, let the stems crowd and obscure, let the figure hold her ground beneath the onslaught of green. There is something deeply human in this image — the way living things press against what endures, the way beauty in two entirely different registers can occupy the same space and neither diminish the other. The classical goddess, her face hidden behind the flowers, becomes something more mysterious than she ever was on a pedestal alone. She is both revealed and concealed. The lilies, so insistently alive, seem to lean toward her as if in recognition. This is the kind of story Nancy invites us into and then steps back from — the beginning is hers, the ending belongs to whoever stands before it. What does it mean to be timeless in a world of fleeting bloom? The painting does not answer. It simply holds the question open, in oil and light and the extraordinary green of things still growing.
