River Rocks

Somewhere along a Northern California shore — perhaps Point Reyes, perhaps the Sonoma coast, places Nancy Cicchetti has walked and photographed for decades — a branch came to rest among the stones. Worn smooth by water and sun, bleached to the color of old bone, it arrived there quietly, carried by forces larger than itself, and settled into the landscape as if it had always belonged. Cicchetti found it with her camera first, then found it again on the canvas. The photograph was the beginning, as it always is for her — but then came the deepening: the shadows between stones grew darker, the light on the branch grew warmer, the whole field of pebbles began to breathe. What started as a found moment became a meditation on stillness and time, on the way the inanimate world holds its own kind of drama. There is something quietly profound about this painting. The branch does not dominate the stones; the stones do not swallow the branch. They coexist in a balance that feels earned, like a friendship of many years. The viewer's eye follows the branch, then loses itself in the gorgeous complexity of the pebble field, then finds the branch again. It is a story without a conclusion — which is exactly how Cicchetti likes it, begun by her and completed by whoever stands before it.
